What would an API for Universities look like?

« Back To University Ideas
get university Hierarchy & courses

an api to query the departmental/school structure of a university, either the whole structure or a sub-part (departments in social sciences).

Also provide courses affiliated to a school, and potential details about those courses (description, entry requirements etc). Useful for sites which provide information about Uk HEI courses, such as HERO or newspapers.

The two concepts decribed above (courses/structure) could e split in to two seperate apis.

Potentially useful schema to return data in

But how many universities have a full and up-to-date picture of their own organisational structure?
I would guess all. Or at least most. Every head of department must know which school/faculty dean they report to.

Sussex, where I work, had traditionally had unusal strutures, but everyone knew what schools existed. If at least for administrative tasks such as exams, timetabling etc.

Isn't this the same as getting an XCRI feed from a school rather than the university catalogue?

Or is this more like getting an org chart as data?
